Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) April 18, 2013

All Pro NFL players past and present join The Pro Player Health Alliance (PPHA) to help spread awareness on the deadly disorder, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on National Sleep Apnea Awareness Day, April 18, 2013. Taking stage for the Tackle Sleep Apnea campaign are the likes of Roy Green, Larry Fitzgerald, Seth Joyner, Derek Kennard, Alfonso Smith, Dave Krieg and Mark Walczak among many other retired NFL superstars. Larry Fitzgerald is actively supporting the “Tackle Sleep Apnea” campaign. The Pro Player Health Alliance’ national campaign has already treated over 100 former NFL players. Many players have been loyal and outspoken advocates of spreading awareness of the deadly disorder across the country. Joined with David Gergen, owner of Gergens Orthodontic Lab and founder of the PPHA, they have been on a mission to Tackle Sleep Apnea nationally.

With Larry having close loved ones that are suffering from sleep apnea, he has gone out of his way to help spread the word on the deadly disease and help the community to understand what it can do and how to get treated. Larry is hoping to find an outpouring of support from the public at the event with many people wanting to meet the players and eventually seek treatment for themselves and/or a loved one.

Also leading the way for treatments across the country is Dr. Rodney Willey. Dr. Willey has one of the largest dental Sleep Apnea practices in the United States with periods of over 100 cases per month. That is outstanding momentum in the treatment of Sleep Apnea. As President of Koala Centers For Sleep Disorders, he now offers dental sleep center franchises with refined techniques being used in multiple locations.

David Gergen, President and CEO of the Pro Player Health Alliance states, We have adopted the Koala Centers for Sleep Disorders as the key provider for our former NFL players for many reasons. One in particular is their seamless systems and consistency in treatment. We can depend on their services and professionalism.” Mr. Gergen also expresses how he likes the fact that the primary goal of the Koala Centers are to help people sleep, breathe and live well through focused healthcare solutions.

Sponsoring the event today is Dr. Gary Core who has purchased a phenomenal Koala Sleep Center from Rod Willey which is rolling into Phoenix. This will be the third Koala Center opening and there are two more Koala openings on the horizon. After the event, Larry Fitzgerald will be signing autographs among other NFL greats. Register for this event today as spots are limited.

This National Bed Month, Challenge Insomnia with the Help of a Hypnotherapist

gI 82060 alarm clock This National Bed Month, Challenge Insomnia with the Help of a Hypnotherapist
(PRWEB UK) 22 March 2013

Chronic insomnia, as anyone who suffers from it will be well aware, is not ideal, but is surprisingly common. Insomnia (Latin for no sleep) is a condition that renders individuals unable to fall asleep or stay asleep, with the term chronic insomnia being used to describe symptoms that have persisted for three weeks or more.

According to the British Sleep Council, the number of Brits who only manage to get between five and six hours of sleep per night has increased dramatically over the past three years, with a staggering 40% not getting the NHS recommended six to nine hours [1]. But just why is sleep so important?

The Science of Sleep

The average human spends a third of their lives doing it, Napoleon and Florence Nightingale survived on not very much of it (four hours per night) and Thomas Edison declared it a waste of time [2]. Everyone has a different perspective on sleep to some it is a luxury to others an inconvenience. Some need very little of it, others need a lot and some cant seem to get much of it at all. Whichever category individuals might fall into however, sleep is a biological requirement without which a human cannot function.

Whilst scientists still remain baffled as to why sleeping is so essential, what they do know for certain is that a lack of it is extremely detrimental to brain performance.

Whilst the majority wouldnt dream of getting behind the steering wheel whilst over the limit, without knowing it a huge number are doing the equivalent by taking to the roads when deprived of sleep. According to Think!, research suggests that almost 20% of accidents on major roads are linked to sleep deprivation, with sleep-related accidents more likely to result in fatality or serious injury than any other kind [3].

In addition to reduced alertness and performance, other short term side effects of insomnia and chronic insomnia include cognitive and memory impairment, stress, relationship stress and generally a poor quality of life.

banner This National Bed Month, Challenge Insomnia with the Help of a Hypnotherapist

If left untreated, the long-term impact can lead to numerous serious medical illnesses including high blood pressure, heart attack, heart failure, stroke and various mental health problems including depression and other mood disorders [4].

Sleep Statistics

This March is National Bed Month, a month long celebration dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of a good nights sleep and sharing tips and advice which will help individuals suffering from insomnia and chronic insomnia to do just that.

The statistics above highlight just how important it is for individuals to get a good rest at the end of each day but with figures suggesting Britain is a growing nation of insomniacs, how can individuals get that much needed shut eye?

Figures put together by the National Sleep Council show that:

A third of the population (33%) is now getting by on just five to six hours sleep a night compared to 27% in 2012.
The majority of people (70%) sleep for seven hours or less.
-Almost half of Britons say that stress or worry keeps them awake at night.

-7.9 million have used alcohol to help them get to sleep at night whilst 6.8 million self-medicate with over-the-counter tonics.

Sleep Advice

Today the average lifestyle is brimming with stimulation from listening to the radio on the way to work through to replying to emails on smart phones and rounding off the day with a spot of television in bed. With so much going on is it really any wonder that many people find it tremendously difficult to switch off at the end of the day?

For those who would classify themselves as having insomnia or chronic insomnia, The Sleep Council have developed some useful advice to help eliminate factors which may be causing disturbed sleep:

In the bedroom

1. Only use the bedroom for sleep and sex and not as an extension of your living quarters.

2. Eliminate light pollution and ensure the room is completely dark. This could mean switching of aerials, televisions, clocks and anything else that might have an LED display. You may also wish to install blackout curtains or use an eye mask.

3. Ensure the temperature is between 16

New National Report, Florida Initiative Puts Focus on School Breakfast

gI 71971 1 FDF Vert Logo RGB New National Report, Florida Initiative Puts Focus on School Breakfast
Orlando, Fla. (PRWEB) March 18, 2013

The move is on to help young people boost their nutrition and overall health and wellness, especially on the heels of a new report that reveals teens aren’t regularly eating the most important meal of the day breakfast and aren’t as active as they should be on a daily basis.

March is National Nutrition Month, and several initiatives have been announced nationally and statewide to help boost childrens health and wellness.

A new report called, The Wellness Impact: Enhancing Academic Success Through Healthy School Environments(1), reinforces the learning connection the crucial link between quality nutrition, physical activity and academic performance. Finding a balance between academic rigor and health and wellness efforts in the school environment has become an increasing priority. The report was released by the GENYOUth Foundation, National Dairy Council (NDC), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American School Health Association (ASHA). Key findings from the report suggest:

More than half (62%) of all teens say they do not eat breakfast every day of the week.(2)

Breakfast eaters have better attention and memory than breakfast skippers.(3)

Three-in-four high school students aren’t active for the recommended 60 minutes each day.(2)

Students who were more active during school performed better on standardized tests for reading, math and spelling.(4)

Studies show that students who eat school breakfast increase their math and reading scores and improve their cognitive speed and memory. Research also links eating breakfast at school to improvements in student behavior, fewer absences, and limited class disruptions.

While many schools lack the funds to execute school wellness policies or to start breakfast programs, progress was made in Florida earlier this month when Floridas Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam announced a partnership with the Dairy Council of Florida to support Florida schools in implementing innovative methods to promote breakfast.

Research indicates that we can improve learning, cognitive development, test scores and behavior by ensuring more students eat a balanced breakfast, said Commissioner Putnam. So were doing just that. Thanks to the generous support of the Dairy Council of Florida, were working with schools to expand breakfast programs and increase student participation.

banner New National Report, Florida Initiative Puts Focus on School Breakfast

The Dairy Council of Florida committed $ 300,000 to aid six Florida school districts in increasing breakfast participation using innovative methods like providing grab-n-go options at the bus drop-off area, allowing breakfast carts to distribute meals in the hallway and serving breakfast in the classroom.

The Dairy Council of Florida is also part of the Fuel Up to Play 60 school wellness program a joint program of the National Dairy Council and National Football League and in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program encourages students to take charge in making small, everyday changes toward a healthy lifestyle at school. In partnership with GENYOUth Foundation, Fuel Up to Play 60 has provided schools with more than $ 10 million in funds to help develop healthy in-school initiatives ranging from breakfast programs to walking clubs.

Children spend the majority of their daytime hours at school, so its important that we work to boost their nutrition during that time, said Dairy Council of Florida Registered Dietitian Alyssa Greenstein. Our programs and partnerships are not only meeting the wellness needs of children throughout Florida, were working to improve their minds and bodies, which ultimately creates healthier and smarter communities.

GISi Announces Successful Completion of Arlington National Cemetery Application

gI 78794 iPhone Search GISi Announces Successful Completion of Arlington National Cemetery Application
Birmingham, Alabama (PRWEB) November 13, 2012

Arlington National Cemetery recently launched Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) Explorer, a location technology application developed by Geographic Information Services, Inc. (GISi), based in Birmingham, Alabama.

After several competitive bid rounds, ANC selected GISi to develop ANC Explorer, a solution that uses cutting edge geospatial technology to provide pinpoint accuracy, data management, analysis, and visualization capabilities.

The application is a web and mobile system that combines imagery, maps, digitized records, photographs, and detailed information about each burial site and memorial at the famous national veterans cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. This will help visitors locate graves of loved ones and provides increased operational efficiency for ANC staff.

Operationally, there are a myriad of roles to fulfill at ANC, from funeral planning to tree trimming, and it is important for staff to be familiar with whats taking place throughout the day so the utmost respect is delivered at all times. The operations team must have the means to view, reference, or add information to a single authoritative source, so that conflicts in data dont result in conflicts of events. This new solution interfaces with ANC business systems, so there is a central source of data and a relevant set of tools for each role at ANC, allowing efficient job execution with sustained data integrity.

In conjunction with the internal facing applications to increase operational efficiency, GISi designed a public facing website applicationANC Explorer. Available via common web browsers, smartphones, and kiosks located in the Visitor Center of ANC, this application provides the public access to detailed information about burial sites, memorials, and special events at Arlington National Cemetery.

Anyone can search burials in a number of ways, including first name, last name, date of birth or date of death to find the location of a loved one, and visitors are provided with in-depth information like internment date, branch of service, cemetery section, and grave number. To add to this, the Armys Third Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) photographed both the front and back of every headstone, urn niche and grave marker so a picture is available to view or download.

ANC Explorer allows patrons to plan their visit online or interact with it while on premises. They have a customized view of the cemetery with the ability to zoom in and out, query sites, view notable gravesite locations, take part in historic tours, and locate memorials. While onsite, visitors can use the application via their smartphone to map a route from their current location to a burial site or memorial. Along the route, the application will highlight other points of interest and events of the day. For those without smartphones, the kiosks in the Visitor Center provide the same information with printed route guide maps and fact sheets.

banner GISi Announces Successful Completion of Arlington National Cemetery Application

Having access to all this information provides two distinct advantages, says Ryan Heitz, GISi Federal Program Manager for the Army. First, it helps those in the cemetery really increase their understanding of the history and be more aware of the memorials around them. People can browse points of interest and learn more about notable graves and memorials. Providing information that might otherwise be overlooked enriches an onsite visit and results in a more memorable experience.

Second, if youre not able to visit the cemetery in person, you can actually experience some of it through the website, says Heitz. There is everything from a Coast Guard memorial to the Space Shuttle Columbia memorial. It increases the ability of the public to explore the cemetery whether they are able to physically visit or not.

The last piece of functionality ANC Explorer adds is the ability for the public to submit feedback. Whether it is information about a particular grave, reports of a positive experience or something that could be improved, users can provide feedback and ideas, even from the mobile app while walking through the cemetery.

This project utilized Geographic information systems (GIS) software from Esri to power the map services on the ANC Explorer website, the maps at kiosks in the cemetery, and mobile applications used by visitors. Esri technology also supports routing on mobile devices that the ANC staff uses for their work. The software used includes ArcGIS for Server and Esris software development kits for Android and IOS.

ANC Explorer was recently honored with a GCN Award for IT Achievement.

Returning Champion Wins Alzheimers Foundation of Americas National Brain Game Challenge with Lightning Speed

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 10, 2012

With much surprise and pride in cracking a crossword crafted by one of the nation’s most recognized crossword puzzle constructors, Jeffrey Harris of Norwalk, CT recently raced to the finish in the Pros division to win the Alzheimers Foundation of Americas (AFA) National Brain Game Challenge for the second year in a row, and Scott Weiss of Walkersville, MD took the Public division with a time that rivaled ace tournament winners who competed in the online contest.

Harris and Weiss both beat the next closest competitors in their divisions by a mere three minutes to each capture a $ 2,500 grand prize.

Merl Reagle, whose popular Sunday crossword puzzle is syndicated in 45 major newspapers across the country, teamed up with AFA for the second straight year to craft the multi-layered, word-twisting crossword as a means of supporting AFAs ongoing efforts to raise awareness of Alzheimers disease and lifestyles that promote brain health. The brain disorder has struck both Reagles mother-in-law and, just recently, his mother.

After AFA disclosed the puzzle on its Web site on September 30, contestants had 24 hours to compete for a total of $ 7,000 in prizes. In publicizing the winners, AFA also announced today that more than 800 people from coast to coast registered for the contest this yearraising more than $ 20,000 to support the organizations care-related programs and services nationwide.

For many contestants, the National Brain Game Challenge marks a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon. But for the growing number of Americans affected by Alzheimers disease, it means so much more. It highlights the daily challenges they face and the critical need for support, said Eric J. Hall, AFAs president and CEO.

Harris, a 27-year-old crossword fanatic and freelance editor, scrambled to finish the puzzle in just 33 minutes, thereby shaving 10 minutes off his previous years time.

It was more challenging [than I expected], especially in the clues, he said. I didnt think Id win again, though, that was a pleasant surprise!

Netting second and third place in the Pros division were Tyler Hinman of San Francisco and Daniel Katz of Providence, RI.

In the Public division, Weiss, a computer science professor at Mount Saint Marys University in Emmitsburg, MD, clocked in at 55 minutes for the grand prize. His grandmother had dementia, but Weiss said he would have entered the contest anyway. Its nice to be able to contribute, he said.

On his heels, also around the one-hour mark, were Jeffrey Schwartz of New York, NY and Eric LeVasseur of Seal Beach, CA, who came in second and third, respectively.

The top solvers conceded that they were so focused on beating the clock that they did not even grasp until afterwards the puzzles intricate Alzheimers-related theme, including answers that involved dropping the letters AD from words in order to underscore a powerful message about eradicating the brain disorder, which is often abbreviated AD.

banner Returning Champion Wins Alzheimers Foundation of Americas National Brain Game Challenge with Lightning Speed

I think thats the danger of trying to speed-solve. You cant savor all of the cleverness in the puzzle, said Weiss, a former Jeopardy! champion who never had a big win from crosswords until this one.

Always wanting to create an online contest, Reagle got involved with AFA after he and his wife, Marie Haley, of Tampa, FL, were caregivers for 1,000 days for Haleys mother, who had Alzheimers disease. This year it got even more personal for Reagle after his 82-year-old mother was similarly diagnosed.

In constructing the challenging puzzle, Reagle explained, I thought that basing an entire puzzle on a seminal part of the disease’s history would raise awareness of how the disease was discovered and that it’s not recentits been a disease with a name for 111 years and without one for a lot longer, yet were still waiting for a cure and family caregivers still need an enormous amount of help.

Hall said that it is critical for adults of all ages to regularly engage in mental activities, such as puzzles, that stimulate brain cells in order to promote successful aging.

Adopting healthy lifestyles takes on even more urgency as the perfect storm keeps brewingan aging population at greater risk for Alzheimers disease and no cure on the horizon, he said.

The benefit of brain boosters is not missed on Hinman, who tackles at least three crosswords a day. He won the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament five years in a row, beginning in 2005 when he was only 20 years old.

I consider the mental exercise to be a great bonus to the fun I have solving puzzles, said Hinman, a memory training game developer.

Unlike the first year of the contest, the National Brain Game Challenge is now divided into two player categories, Pros and Public. The Pros are contestants with $ 200 or more in lifetime crossword puzzle earnings, whether through winning tournaments or creating crosswords for professional markets. The Public are those who have received less than $ 200 in lifetime puzzle earnings.

Reagle said he is just speechless at the great turnout.

I especially want to say thanks to the Public players; I know the puzzle was on the hard side, and I just hope they understand how much I truly appreciate their taking a chance and participating, and helping to support such a great cause, he said. Next year, I promisenot so hard!

Currently, as many as 5.1 million Americas have been diagnosed with Alzheimers disease, a progressive brain disorder that results in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

The Alzheimers Foundation of America, based in New York, is a national nonprofit organization that unites more than 1,600 member organizations nationwide with the goal of providing optimal care and services to individuals confronting dementia, and to their caregivers and families. Its services include counseling and referrals by licensed social workers via a toll-free hot line, e-mail, Skype, and live chat; educational materials; a free quarterly magazine for caregivers; and professional training. For more information about AFA, call toll-free 866-232-8484 or visit http://www.alzfdn.org.

CCRC Residents at Vi Communities Across U.S. to Mark National Senior Health & Fitness Day

gI 71126 Vi Logo color CCRC Residents at Vi Communities Across U.S. to Mark National Senior Health & Fitness Day
Chicago IL (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

Vi residents from across the United States will be among the more than 100,000 older adults who on May 30 will participate in this years National Senior Health & Fitness Day, the nations largest older adult health and fitness event, which is celebrating its 19th year in 2012.

Scheduled activities to mark the event at various Vi continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) will range far and wide. Vi at La Jolla Village, CA, will begin the day with a morning walk, which is only the first of a full schedule of activities to include tai chi, yoga, Wii bowling, line dancing and even a drumming session. Vi at Highlands Ranch, CO, will hold a lifestyle seminar and special dance. Vi at Aventura, FL, will be among the participants in a health fair to be held at Sunny Isles Beach.

At Vi, we like to say boredom is not an option and this is especially true on this special day, said Bill Sciortino, Senior Vice President of Operations.

With more than 70 million baby boomers entering their retirement years, experts say for those 65 and over staying active and fit can spell the difference between independence and frailty. Older adults who are fit are likely to have a better quality of life and to live longer.

As an aging strategy, wellness is more than the absence of disease, said Sciortino. Its an approach to positive living that can lead to improved physical, mental and emotional health. We deliver services and care at Vi with an approach based on whole-person wellness, which definitely includes a physical dimension.

Recently, Vi commissioned a report by Ken Dychtwald Ph.D., renowned gerontologist, psychologist, best-selling author, and CEO of Age Wave that challenges the prevailing myths and misperceptions about CCRC living, including the myth that CCRCs are filled with old people who are sick and dying.

The reality, according to the report, is that many people choose CCRCs to pursue opportunities for new learning, new activities and a new chapter in life. The report, The Five Myths and Realities of Continuing Care Retirement Communities, is available in its entirety at http://www.ViLiving.com.

CCRCs offer independent living with a combination of a private residence, services, amenities and care (for example, assisted living, memory support care and skilled nursing care).

Organized as a public/private good health partnership by the Mature Market Resource Center (MMRC), Senior Health & Fitness Day will offer fitness activities for older adults at more than 1,000 locations including hospitals, park and recreation departments, senior centers, health clubs, retirement communities, houses of worship, health departments and other community locations. The event is always held on the last Wednesday in May as part of Older Americans Month activities.

About Vi

Vi, formerly Classic Residence by Hyatt, was founded in 1987 as a developer, owner and operator of older adult living communities. The company is dedicated to enriching the lives of older adults by providing quality environments, services and care. Gilbert, Arizona (PRWEB) December 06, 2011

New Mexico is called it the Land of Enchantment because of its natural beauty–from its open skies to its vast desert vistas and beautiful mountains. But it is also enchanting as a home to ancient sacred sites and as a place of wonder to which many people have come seeking spiritual sustenance. It is no surprise that Dahn Yoga has selected New Mexico as a key site to host part of its nationwide “Power of Meditation” event series on December 17, 2011.

Though yoga has become widespread in American culture, Dahn Yoga offers a unique perspective, in that it favors integration over specialization. Meditation is integrated into all aspects of practice. According to Dahn Yoga CEO, Dong Hoon Cha “the yoga most people know is only part of an important process. Yoga calms the body and mind in preparation for meditation.” Dahn Yoga teaches that through meditation, we can learn important stress-management skills. Deep breathing, relaxation and focus enable us to manage our responses to life’s circumstances. In addition, Dahn Yoga meditation helps individuals develop awareness and acceptance of their physical body, their thoughts and emotions. This, in turn helps practitioners develop better relationships with other people and with their environments.

Based on Korean tradition, Dahn Yoga meditation focuses on movement, enabling practitioners to experience the benefits of meditation more quickly. The “Power of Meditation,” a dynamic and entertaining nationwide workshop, will feature: Simple, powerful meditation techniques; live music performance; martial arts demonstration; Collaborative Meditation; and an inspirational presentation by Ilchi Lee, Dahn Yoga founder and author of The Call of Sedona. All participants will receive Dahn Yoga’s biggest giveaway ever: a free one-month Dahn Yoga Membership.

In the New Mexico, the event will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday, December 17th from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, with an informational expo from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM.
