Memory Improvement Medication/Supplements…?
Question by : Memory Improvement Medication/Supplements…?
I’ve been on a cocktail of antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, you name it, for a long time and they’ve had a huge impact on my memory and focus/attention, especially effexor xr (which i’m trying to wean off of – no easy feat). My doctor refuses to give me a psycho-stimulant and instead just told me to take omega-3 and that the supplement would help. I used to be a really good student and even if I may not have been right at the top too often, I was always somewhere around it but now, my grades are slipping and I’m finding it very hard to concentrate, focus, understand and mostly REMEMBER what I learn, which has never happened to me prior to these meds (i noticed this never happened until id been taking effexor for a few months. i’d been on many others and they had affected a lot of things but not my memory and stuff). I’m doing medicine in a really top-notch university and I got in based on my performance at school and on my pre-med year, I did really well and now, I’m on the other end of the spectrum for the first time in my life. I don’t mind doing average, but the way I am right now could mean I might flunk. I can’t concentrate, it takes me a long time to understand even the simplest of things and I can never remember anything and it makes me really frustrated and anxious. I know there are lots of memory exercises etc that I could do, but i was wondering if anyone ever took any specific medication that helped you significantly? I’m on wellbutrin as well and it’s supposed to be used off-label for ADHD but it hasn’t helped at ALL.
Thanks for reading!

Eat lots of fish (the oils, etc. are good for your brain.)
Peppermint. The smell and the taste are good for improving mental stimulation.
A few days before a test, my science teacher would tell us to eat fish for dinner, get a good night’s sleep, blah blah blah, but during the actual test she would give us peppermints to eat because science has proven that those 2 things are good for retaining memory and “keeping your brain awake” she called it.

I know the feeling. I’m on Viibryd,an antidepressant, Abilify, to supplement the Viibryd, Ambien, for sleep, and Adderall for attention. After a while on Viibryd and Ambien my doctor added adderall because I couldn’t focus on my school work and my memory was not what it used to be, I’m 19 and an aspiring doctor as well. I also had A’s in high school and just don’t understand why I am going through this. I’ve heard very good things about the fish oils but not much on the peppermints, I’ll try that. But, it might just be the effexor making your focus and memory fizzle. Hopefully some tricks work, otherwise your doctor might need to switch your medicine.
